Frist and the Taliban

Mark Foley

I am sometimes misunderstood in my posts as being an apologist for the right. This is far from the truth. I condemned Mark Foley vehemently. I think his behavior was disgraceful, and will deservedly have monumental effects for the Republican Party and for the nation. What I object to, though, is hypocrisy. I hear no outcries from the Left when similar behavior occurs on their side—witness Barney Frank and Gary Studds. Following are 16 sexual misconduct cases in congress and how they were handled: congressional sexual misconduct.

Bill Frist and the Taliban

It was quietly reported in the news today that Senator Bill Frist, Majority Leader of the Senate and a possible presidential candidate, has advocated welcoming the Taliban into the Afghan government. This is an astounding suggestion. I have to pause a moment to take it all in.

The Taliban, after all, is the reason why we went to Afghanistan in the first place. They were the ones who offered succor to Osama Bin Laden and helped him destroy our twin towers, killing 3,000 of our citizens.

Frist apparently says that the Taliban are too numerous and too popular in Afghanistan to defeat them militarily.

If this is true, then I agree with Frist. I believe in Realpolitic. We’ve done the same thing in the past, turning mortal enemies into governments we deal with. Witness Japan, Germany, and Italy. We’ve dealt with the PLO. We were allies of Saddam Hussein. Sometimes you must deal with the devil. You deal with him, but watch him, and punish him when he becomes “devilish” again.

Unless we revert to our WWII war policies of bombing cities into oblivion, then we will never eliminate our enemies completely. We were so harsh in WWII that we annihilated the Nazi party in Germany, and completely replaced the governments in Japan and Italy. We are a weaker nation now, thanks to liberals, so we don’t do such “monstrous” things anymore. We would never bomb Hiroshima today, or Nagasaki. We would never carpet bomb Dresden or Berlin. If we fought WWII the way we fight today, there’d still be a Nazi party, fascism in Italy, and an Emperor in Japan.

Given our present political climate, and being a Realpolitic guy, the only alternative, now, I think, is to do just what Frist advises. Welcome the Taliban into government, and then “communicate” with them, monitor them, spy on them in fact, and be ready to react with force if they ever plot against us again. We might have to use this distasteful strategy too in Iraq. Face reality. With the one hand behind our back that liberals force us to have, this is all we can expect from our present reality.
